The BSc Dietetics is a four-year programme offered on a full time basis. It is offered at NQF level 7, with a total of 480 credits. The program is accredited by the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA)’s Professional Board for Dietetics and Nutrition (DNB). The Profession is about training dietitians who use the science of food and nutrition to prevent and treat diseases, as well as to sustain their livelihoods.

Dietitians at UL are trained to be competent leaders and improve the quality of life of the general population through the advancement of the indigenous Nutrition Knowledge System. They are skilled to contribute to the nutrition services at local, national, and international levels in an innovative, ethical, and professional manner. The training is designed to equip students with the theoretical and practical skills to meet all the competencies as stipulated by the DNB of the HPCSA. Thus, it involves laboratory practicum and a lot of travelling to the clinical training sites.

From the first level of study, the BSc Dietetics students should register once with the HPCSA as a student dietitians. BSc Dietetics graduates shall complete a 1-year remunerated compulsory community service. Registration with the HPCSA as a community service Dietitian (CSD) is mandatory. Upon completion of the community service, the CSD should register with the HPCSA within the independent practice category. From this stage henceforth, it is mandatory to register with the HPCSA on an annual basis. Dietitians practice in the following fields:

  4. Sports nutrition
  5. Research
